YUCCA
Yucca acts as a natural anti-inflammatory agent and tends to reduce joint swelling and pain. It contains natural steroidal-like saponins that are effective anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic which are known to reduce arthritic pain. To put it simply arthritis is chronic joint inflammation.

When a joint becomes inflamed, blood and other fluids rush to the sight, bringing infection fighting blood cells and enzymes.

This rush of fluids dilutes the synovial fluid that is the lubricating and waste removal material of the joint.

In this diluted state synovial fluid loses the ability to lubricate and clean the joint.

Healthy cartilage that is near the inflammation is now at risk with each movement of the unlubricated joint.

The inflammation will begin to feed on itself by producing its own destructive enzymes, which impede healing, thus creating more inflammation and causing another rush of infection fighting blood cells and enzymes.

This cycle continues damaging cartilage and producing bone spurs. Strong evidence supports the theory that some forms of arthritis may be caused or worsened by toxic substances occurring in the intestines and absorbed by the body. Yucca seems to inhibit these harmful intestinal bacteria and at the same time help the natural and normal forms of bacteria found in the tract.

Yucca’s saponins are also effective at binding the ammonia and nitrogen in the digestive tract, thus allowing it to pass out with the feces and not be reabsorbed.  Thus, liver stress in response to a high protein diet will diminish as ammonia, one of the end results of protein breakdown, is converted from urea in the colon by colonic flora.  If the liver is not able to reconvert ammonia back to urea, because of large protein qualities from diet or impaired renal or liver function, resulting ammonia toxicities can ensue.

Nitrogen is also a by-product of the digestive process. Some seepage of nitrogen through the gut wall into the reproductive system naturally occurs.

Nitrogen is a determent to the production of healthy eggs, thus it can kill reproductive eggs. Yucca binds up the nitrogen and expels it from the animal's system.

Yucca was added to dac Breeder’s Choice because of it’s buffering effects in the digestive tract and binding to and removal of nitrogen from the reproductive tract.

SHARK CARTILAGE
There are many components of shark cartilage that are known to exert beneficial effects on bone and joint health. Shark cartilage is a rich source of chondroitin and glycoaminoglycans (glucosamine-like compounds), both of which have been described as natural anti-inflammatory agents. In the case of glucosamine-like compounds, prospective clinical trials in humans have shown evidence of cartilage renewal in joints with advanced changes of osteoarthritis. The role of type II collagen of foreign origin (shark, chicken or bovine) in the induction of oral tolerization in immune types of arthritis (e.g. rheumatoid disease) has been well documented. Excellent clinical results in the improvement of inflammatory arthritis with type II collagen have been reported.

Various types of arthritis may be amenable to therapy with antiangiogenic compounds such as shark cartilage. Animal studies show it has major potential application in the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Several researchers have reported a clear association between neovascularization and osteoarthritis, adding weight to the rationale of using cartilage to treat arthritis. Shark cartilage is also a rich source of bio available calcium, which is beneficial for patients with osteoporosis who require calcium supplementation.

Studies in animals have shown quite promising results with the use of cartilage for the treatment of arthritis of diverse forms. Rauis presented important data to the British Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress in 1991 on the beneficial effects of a prototype preparation of Cartilade for the treatment of secondary arthritis in the dog. Several beneficial outcomes were noted in these animal studies. Rauis (1991) utilized the prototype Cartilade brand of shark cartilage in 10 dogs with lameness due to the following disorders alone or in combination: joint fracture, hip dysplasia, joint dislocation, spondylopathy and rupture of the cruciate ligament.

The main beneficial effect in the study seemed to be reduction in the local swelling and inflammation in the joints of the dogs. Rauis described the overall effect on functional parameters in the dogs as "impressive." In this non-label, non-blinded study, Cartilade appeared effective and safe to administer in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis.

SHARK CARTILAGE COMPONENTS
Shark cartilage is made up of mainly collagen, amino acids, minerals and glycosaminoglycan.
Shark cartilage contains over 40% pure collagen protein, plus essential and non essential amino acids. Collagen and Amino Acids are necessary for elasticity of the tissues, healing of cracked skin, torn ligaments and tendons and growth and rejuvenation of skin and connective tissues. It is also a good source of minerals-calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron and chromium, manganese and silica. These components are essential for the maintenance and normal function of cells, muscles, bones and joints. Glycosaminoglycans attract and retain moisture to resist compression and deliver nutrients to cells that need it. They are also important building blocks for joint cartilage components, shock absorbing properties and replenishment of joint fluid lubricant.

BOSWELLIA

Boswellia shrinks inflamed tissue, the underlying cause of pain, by improving the blood supply to the affected area and enhancing the repair of local blood vessels damaged by proliferating inflammation. Experimental and clinical usage of boswellia indicates it has none of the side effects on blood pressure, heart rate of the gastric irritation and ulcers associated with many anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic drugs. Boswellia Serrata has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, pain reduction, and helps in cartilage building. Originating in Africa, China, and the Middle East, boswellia herbal extract is derived from the sappy resin of the boswellia tree. In the 1970s, German scientists discovered that boswellia produces therapeutic effects similar to those of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) compounds ibuprofen and aspirin. Unlike boswellia, however, NSAIDs work by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes. Unfortunately, medications that inhibit COX-2 often inhibit COX-1, which is needed to maintain a healthy stomach lining and common side effects include gastrointestinal bleeding.
Boswellia differs from the NSAIDs in its mode of action. Boswellia has been shown to reduce inflammation in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other autoimmune conditions by blocking the lethal pro-inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX). A number of immune system chemicals released during the inflammatory response contribute to the chronic inflammation seen in atherosclerosis, osteoarthritis and certain autoimmune diseases. Blocking these pro-inflammatory chemicals reduces symptoms of inflammation and helps taper the autoimmune mechanism.

GRAPE SEED EXTRACT
Grape seed extract is one of the most potent antioxidants found in nature. Grape seed extract contains a special class of water-soluble bioflavonoids called proanthocyanidins. These compounds help fight free radicals, the loose oxygen particles that can damage cells. Studies have shown the antioxidant activity of these specific bioflavonoids is 20 to 50 times greater than Beta-Carotene or Vitamins C and E at scavenging specific free radicals. Free radicals are incomplete atoms or molecules that are the natural by-products of everyday metabolic, detoxification, and immune system processes. Overabundant amounts of free radicals in the body. Antioxidants like grape seed extract are the body’s natural defense system against these substances. Antioxidants are molecules that can safely neutralize free radicals, promoting cell health.
